Frequently Asked Questions
Do you allow drones and first-person view (FPV) flying?
- We allow any and all types of drone at our field.
- FPV (i.e., Fat Shark goggles) may not be used to pilot any aircraft of any type.
All flights at our field must be conducted using natural, un-aided line of sight. Wearing any device over your eyes in order to pilot a vehicle, is prohibited.
Do I need to register with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly at your location?
Yes. Federal law requires all recreational fliers ( i.e., hobbyists) to register with the FAA and get a unique I.D. that they must affix to all of their aircraft. You can learn more about the rules at the FAA’s Recreational Fliers & Modeler Community-Based Organizations webpage.
Do I need to be Part 107 Certified to fly a drone at your field?
No. Part 107 Certification applies only if an individual is operating a drone for work or business purposes. Since Free State Aeromodelers operates as a Charter Club under the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) we fly for hobby or recreational purposes and follow a community-based set of safety guidelines.
I’m a business owner or in the military seeking to test my equipment can I fly at your location?
No. We can not authorize the use of our field for equipment testing or military training.
Why do I have to be a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA)?
The AMA provides our club members the insurance needed to fly at our field. This insurance protects the club, its members, and most of all you. But it’s just not an insurance policy, it’s an open invitation to events all across the U.S. and to resources the AMA provides its members.
I have an AMA Park Pilot Program membership. Can I use that to join Free State Aeromodelers?
Absolutely! And please keep in mind that Park Pilot membership allows you to only fly aircraft that are considered park sized at our field (2 pounds, 60 mph max speed, no internal combustion engine). So once you exceed any Park Pilot limitations (e.g., you want to fly a glow powered aircraft) you must become an AMA Full (Open) Member. For more details visit the AMA website’s Membership Options page.
